Peralta Canyon Trail Hike: Image 1
This hike is an out-and-back hike along the Peralta Trail up Peralta Canyon to Fremont Saddle and then down into Boulder Canyon to Piñon Camp near the base of Weavers Needle.

Right from the start this hike presents some incredible volcanic rock formations.

Rugged and tortured volcanic cliffs.

A hillside of volcanic hoodoos, spires, columns, chimneys and pinnacles is the prominent feature on the western side of the Peralta Canyon.

One of my favorite images from this hike. I love the beautiful color of the sky and the thin whispy clouds in the backdrop of this closeup of the volcanic butte.

This rock calls to mind the statues on Easter Island. He looks serenely out over Peralta Canyon.

As the Peralta Trail climbs up the canyon (to the right, in this photo) it eventually comes quite close to the hoodoos on this hillside.

Allow your imagination to wander and it will see all types strange creatures in the wild rock formations along the trail.

A whole army of hoodoos greet any hikers that happen along.

What keeps these rocks from sliding on down?

The march of the hoodoos continues.

The trail passes to the left of the balanced boulder formation. The trail then crosses the canyon and switchbacks up the hillside behind it.

Once the trail starts to switchback up the hillside you have a wonderful view of the lava formation around the balanced boulder.

There's a hole in the rock, dear Liza, a hole. Fremont Saddle is just around the corner from this volcanic rock.

Peralta Canyon Trail Hike: Image 44
From Fremont Saddle there is an incredible view of Weavers Needle, the signature landmark of the Superstition Wilderness.

Peralta Canyon Trail Hike: Image 45
Although it looks like one spire, Weavers Needle actually has two spires. The smaller southern spire, which you can see if you look closely in this image, is directly in front of the larger spire in this closeup view.

From Fremont Saddle the Peralta Trail continues down the other side dropping into Boulder Canyon along the west side of Weavers Needle.

A view from Boulder Canyon shortly after I've turned around for the hike back to Fremont Saddle.

Peralta Canyon Trail Hike: Image 49
Back up to Fremont saddle with a great view Weavers Needle towering above the surrounding landscape.

Peralta Canyon Trail Hike: Image 50
Weavers Needle is an ancient volcanic plug, formed after lava hardened in the volcano's vent and the surrounding softer rock of the volcano eroded away over time (many, many moons) leaving this magnificent landmark that we see today.

Common Raven (Corvus corax) hopping around the boulders at Fremont Saddle.

Not only is there a hole in the rock, but there's a hole in the cactus too.

On my way back down the Peralta Trail I couldn't resist a few more shots of the wonderful scene, this one with a nice view of the surrounding desert mountains in the background.
